Humans and the Environment

“We are now the dominant feature of our own environment” (Thomas 916). Lewis Thomas argues the affect of humans on the environment and the implications associated with humans' influence in nature.
Humans are starting to completely take over the environment that we live in. Yes, it is an environment that we, as people, live in and develop through our influence. However, it is also an environment in which several other species of plants and animals live in and are trying to survive and maintain their roles in nature as well. In our world today, the environment has suffered various times because of people's carelessness towards the nature around them. When an individual decides to litter plastic, for example, away instead of recycling it, it goes straight into the environment, harming an animal that happens to come across it. It is in humans' decisions and mindsets that our planet survives with everything healthy in it. When humans do not respect the other species that are equally as important to the world, the environment starts to lose its sense of compatibility, strength, and health. As nature used to be thought of as a beautiful representation of our world and all of the incredible elements of it, it is now completely changed by humans and is shown through the destruction of the environment and what it has become. With the influence of humans, we have affected the environment tremendously to the point where the purpose of nature and the environment around us has changed to become a demonstration of what people have done to the beauty that was once our world. We need to start taking more positive actions now, as a society, in order to save the future and environment.

  1. The connection you made about the compatibility of environment and our actions as humans was really interesting. It's shocking to see how much our choices can impact other species, which then impacts the environment as a whole. At the end, you mention taking more positive actions. What are effective, positive actions that you think society should take?

  2. The argument was very strong and had a distinctive tone that was supported by good word choice. I liked the quote that was used because it was powerful and had meaning, in which there were many important points that you brought up. Overall, I think your blog post was strong, clear, and got the message across to readers. On the other hand, how do you think humans may be enhancing the environment?

  3. I really enjoyed your view on how humans impact the environment in many different ways! I thought it was very compelling that you recognized the other species and how they are also trying to live and survive on the earth along with humans. I also thought you did a very good job on explaining that we must change our actions to prevent more destruction of the environment and the other species living on the earth! How do you think as a society we can attempt to change how we treat the environment?

  4. I agree that the environment is suffering in many negative ways due to the actions of humans. However, do you think humans can make a positive impact on the environment? What specifically would people need to do in order to improve the current state of the environment?

  5. You have a strong argument and it was well supported by both your time and the evidence you used. The description of nature becoming a demonstration of what humans have done was very interesting and something I agree with as today, we are seeing more and more of society’s effects on the environment and most of them are harmful. Do you think it will be possible for humans to change before it is to late?

  6. I like how you used emotionally-charged language in your argument. Words like "respect," "strength," "suffered," and"carelessness" elicit different emotions like guilt for causing so much harm to the environment, and hope for the future of the planet. This makes the argument stronger because it makes the audience emotionally invested. Good job!
